A study was conducted to determine the effects on rule learning of verbal statement and demonstration, with and without a human model, and using a methodology that would isolate the effects of overt practice. Performance in the application of two rules based on relationship between geometric forms was the dependent variable. One hundred children from third and fouth grades were assigned to a control condition and to four experimental conditions: modeled demonstration, modeled verbal statement, unmodeled demonstration and unmodeled verbal statement. All five conditions and the test for rule learning were conveyed by slided tape prsentations. A 2( model; no model) x 2 (verbal statement; demonstration) x 2 (boys; girls) ANOVA was conducted on the scores obtained. The verbal statement condition was found to be more effective than the demonstration condition. No other factor had significant effects. The sociocultural function of human models in connection with rule learning was not confirmed by the results. Further data analysis indicated that demonstrations sometimes had effect of teaching incorrect rules. Suggestions are made for further research studies. |
